Accent chairs have really become a popular complement to most room furnishings. Although we think of a chair as just being an extra place to sit, accent chairs provide so much more value to a room’s overall design and aesthetic.

How To Choose The Right Accent Chair

Whether it’s to add a pop of color or layering on additional personality to your space, accent chairs are a great way to pull the room’s design together. I love how my accent chairs in my home add additional visual interest to my neutral color palette, like these rattan chairs in my sunroom.

Although it’s not rocket science, choosing an accent chair and finding the perfect one for your home, can be an overwhelming experience to some. Factors like space, cohesiveness, style, and materials are all considerations when making the right choice for your space.

When it comes to home decorating, you don’t need to be an interior designer to get it right. However, it always helps to look at all the factors and to have another pair of eyes to look at your space from a new point of view.

In this post, I am sharing practical tips that can help you with your decision-making process and narrow down your accent chair choices.

How To Choose The Right Accent Chair

What’s the function of the chair?

Ask questions like: How will the chair be used in the room? Is the chair to sit on or is it more decorative in nature?

The answers will help guide you to the type of chair that’s best suited for your space. If you’re looking to just add some additional seating around your coffee table, then an accent chair is a perfect choice.

Follow the color scheme of the room

Your goal is to have a cohesive look with your accent chair and how it fits in with the rest of your furnishings. The accent chair does not have to match the other furniture but should work well with the overall look, feel and color in your living space.

Is the chair balanced with the other furniture?

Find an accent chair that is in scale to the other pieces in the room. If you have a large couch, a chair club chair would look more balanced than a slipper chair would.

It’s important, when you’re looking to choose the perfect accent chair for your space, that its size complements your other furniture pieces.

Be purposeful with pattern and textures

Accent chairs come in a variety of patterns and textures. Evaluate your current furnishings and choose a chair that works well with any other pattern or texture in your room.

Many times, accent chairs are used as decorative elements to add additional patterns to a space. You can really have fun with these extra seating choices, some people even choose to make them the focal points in the room.

Does the chair meet the style of the space

Accent chairs should be a complement to any room. Accomplish this by blending in the current style of the room with the chair type. Suitable matches such as a rattan armchair with a neutral-colored couch or a solid or printed sofa with a leather wing-back chair would be great options.
