Accent tables are a great way to use a small piece of furniture to make a big impact on your living space. How you decorate an accent table is also a great way to incorporate your personality into your home.

Choosing the right decor for your accent table or where to place it in your home can be a challenge. It differs from decorating a coffee table because its main objective is to elevate your home’s aesthetic rather than being strictly practical.

So I am dedicating this post to guide you on how to decorate your accent tables while keeping them functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time!

How To Decorate An Accent Table

Add Baskets and Trays

If there is enough space, then try adding baskets or trays to your accent table. You can find many aesthetically pleasing ones and they also make your home decor look more purposeful and organized.

If you have a smaller accent table then avoid using baskets or trays that take up most of the surface area. Skip this addition if your table is too small, or if you choose to add one then make sure it’s small!

Incorporate Greenery

I am always looking for ways to add more greenery to my house. It’s the perfect way to bring a fresh and lively vibe to your spaces!

An accent table is a great place for a small plant or flowers (faux or real, it’s up to you) to add a bit of natural beauty to your space. Plus, they’re an easy piece to switch out as you update your decor throughout seasons! I always love a cute little arrangement on a table between a pair of accent chairs!

Play with Height

When thinking about how to decorate an accent table, always add height! Adding height is the best way to create visual interest and add some dimension to the display.

You can choose one main object, which is usually the tallest one, then add some smaller items around it depending on the size of your accent table.

Add Some Light

If your accent table is small enough that all you can fit on it is a lamp, then that’s totally okay! Lighting counts as decor as long as you choose one that fits with your house aesthetic!

If you have a larger accent table then you can also try adding two matching candles or small table lamps at either end to add some balance and symmetry.

Use Functional Decor Pieces

From a practical mindset, using functional decor is the best way to get the most bang for your buck. Lighting, baskets, and trays are all great examples of functional decor pieces.

These options will help to organize your clutter while also elevating the look of your space!

Select a Color Scheme

Choose a color scheme that complements the overall decor style of the room. This will create harmony and tie the accent table into the broader design of the living room.

Rotate Seasonal Decor

The best way to keep your accent table looking fresh is by rotating your seasonal decor items. This ensures that the space remains dynamic and continues to stay on theme with the rest of your house.

I love decorating my house each season and swapping out my accent table and side table decor is always so much fun.

Choose a Focal Point

Interior designers have been sharing this tip for year, but don’t forget to always choose a focal point or theme for your accent table. It could be a decorative item, a piece of art, or even a stack of books.

A focal point will help you create a cohesive look and gives you a helpful starting point when choosing the remainder of your decor!

Baskets

As mentioned above, baskets are a great way to add a functional element to your accent table decor. They’re also a wonderful way to add some texture to the mix and I love using them to display my favorite coffee table books!

Keep in mind that you should choose a basket that is an appropriate size for your table. I love this small basket set from Amazon because it adds a natural element to my entry and it’s a great price as well!

Vases

Vases are a great option to decorate an accent table because there are so many different shapes, sizes, and colors that you’re sure to find one you love! Plus, you can always toss in a few of your favorite real or faux stems for an extra pop of color.

You can find many affordable options online as well as at your favorite storefronts. This beautiful terracotta vase from Target is a favorite of mine, as well as this neutral earthenware option!

Lamps

As I stated before, one of my favorite decorating tips is to add some lighting options. Whether you’re decorating a console table, nesting table, or accent table, lamps are a practical choice that can also really elevate the look of your display.

For a larger accent table, this beautiful set of 2 cottage style lamps is a great way to create symmetry. If you have a smaller table then try to find a lamp of an appropriate size to match, like this one!

Trays

Trays are a smaller and more subtle decor option that will also act as a way to organize your clutter. Plus, you can find many different options that vary in textures, sizes, and colors.

I love this pretty hand woven tray that is functional and it also adds some great texture to the space. Or if you’re looking for more of an elevated look then try out this beautiful travertine option!

Candles and Candle Holders

Candles are a lovely decorative item that adds both beauty and warmth to an accent table. Even if they are purely decorative, they still provide a calming homey vibe to your home.

These beautiful antique-looking candle holders are a favorite of mine and they pair perfectly with these flameless candles from Amazon! Or if you want a candle that also gives off a wonderful aroma then a simple option like this one from Target is a great choice.

Mirrors

Placing a small decorative mirror on the accent table is one of my favorite table decor ideas because it can create the illusion of more space! It reflects light which makes the area feel brighter and larger.

Be sure to choose a frame that complements your decor and keep in mind the size of the mirror compared to the wall space and the size of your accent table. This beautiful arched mirror is one of my favorites in my home and I especially love the neutral color!
