December is one of the busiest months of the year, and that’s why I often look forward to slowing things down in January. The new year is all about making a fresh start and celebrating new beginnings. One of my favorite ways to get the new year off to a great start is to give my home a refresh.

It’s the perfect opportunity to evaluate your home and decide if your décor still matches your current style preferences. So today, I’m sharing some practical tips on how to refresh your home for the New Year.

How To Refresh Your Home For The New Year

Packing Away Holiday Decor

December was a blast and you’ve celebrated to your heart’s content. But now it’s time to pack up all of that beautiful Holiday décor! I love Christmas decorations as much as everyone does, but it’s also extremely satisfying once it’s all been packed away and my home is a fresh clean slate.

Find some heavy-duty storage containers that can stack on top of each other and make sure to wrap up your delicate décor in bubble wrap! Try to keep it as organized as possible so it will be easy to unpack next year.

Get Organized

Now that the decorations are packed away, it’s time to get organized! This is the perfect opportunity to take a hard look at the areas of your home that have become a disorganized mess and find simple solutions for them.

If your entryway is a mess, try adding some cabinets or storage benches to hide all of those shoes and coats. Is it too early for Spring cleaning? Not in this house. Clean up, get organized and start the new year off on the right foot!

Declutter Your Home

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that my house can acquire an alarming amount of clutter in a very short amount of time. You’re going along with your busy life and then suddenly it’s everywhere! The new year is an excellent time to sort through all that unnecessary clutter and toss it or donate it.

A great way of keeping the clutter organized is to use storage baskets. I love this seagrass basket from TJ Maxx. You can use them for storing pillows or blankets under the coffee table in the living room, as a toy basket for your kids, or in a closet for storing towels or linens! They’re practical and pleasing to the eye!

Add Some Color

When thinking of how to refresh your home for the new year a great option is to add a pop of color! If you’d prefer not to undergo a massive change like painting all of your walls, then a simple option would be to add some small colorful pieces around your home.

I love to switch out my throw pillows and blankets each season because it’s an easy and effective way to add some color to your space and they’re practical too. Or you can try finding some new curtain panels, adding a new piece of art, or refreshing a space with a new rug!

Embrace Greenery

The new year is an exciting time but unfortunately, it can also be a little bit dreary in Chicago. However, the perfect way to add some life to your home is by adding greenery! Find some low-maintenance house plants and incorporate them into your home by adding them to shelves, tables, or even hanging from the ceiling!

Not only will they add a fresh vibe to your home, but they’ve also been known to improve your mood and help to eliminate air pollutants! Don’t have a green thumb, then go for faux greenery which these days looks just as good as the real thing!

Update your Art

Nothing wakes up a boring wall like a new piece of art! I love to incorporate art prints into almost every room of my house. They’re a great way to add a personal touch to your space and you can easily find prints that match with any theme. This flourishing field print is a favorite of mine that I added to a wall above the dresser in the bedroom!

Finding the right print can make a huge impact on the overall look of your living space. Plus, if you shop around you’ll be able to find some beautiful prints that won’t break the bank.

Adding a New Pattern

What better way to say “out with the old, in with the new” than by adding a new pattern? If you’ve cleared out your clutter and found your home lacking a certain sense of pizzazz, then try finding a fun new pattern to liven it up! Simple things like patterned throws, pillows, drapes, or even wallpaper are a great way to add a touch of excitement to your home.

Rearrange Your Furniture

If you’re starting the new year with a goal to save money, then don’t worry you can freshen up your house without breaking the bank! Simply rearrange the furniture that you already have to give each room a new perspective.

For example, moving a chair from the living room to the bedroom, switching your bed from one wall to another, or switching art prints to different rooms. Each option is an easy way to refresh your home that will also have a huge visual impact!

Create a Space for Your New Year’s Resolutions

Every January, millions of people sit down and make a list of their new years resolutions. If you’re one of those people then the best thing you can do is create a space in your home to help you achieve it. If you’d like to read more then create a comfortable reading nook.

Or if you’d like to exercise more, then rearrange a spare bedroom as a designated space. You’ll find that your home has enough room to help you make space for any new resolution you have! Once you’ve designated a space for your new hobby, you’re more likely to stick to it!
